Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter was on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise as a little girl. The aunt she had was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to art literature and theatre. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her youth, however she was able to spend summers with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to look at the trash of the home of a juror. As a result of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Autumn Riley is a famous American actress best known as the actress in American Experience (1997) and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn appeared as Rose as Rose in A More Perfect Union, as well as Anna Payne in American Experience.
